Sound problems in Counter-Strike 2 are a frequent occurrence, especially after major updates. It happens that sound disappeared in CS2 immediately after launch, or you may face a situation where CS says there is sound, but there is none in the headphones.
In this material, we have collected all the solutions — from simple settings to console commands.
Why there is no sound in CS: First steps to check
Before diving into game files, check the basics. Often the reason why sound is not working in CS2 lies in system settings:
- Default device: Press Win + R, type
mmsys.cpl. Make sure your headphones are set as "Default device" and "Default communication device". - Volume mixer: Right-click the speaker icon in the tray -> Volume mixer. Check if the sound is muted specifically for the CS2 application.
- In-game configuration: Go to Settings -> Audio. Make sure the correct "Audio output device" is selected.
Sound disappeared in CS2: Console commands for the fix
If the system is fine but the game is silent, use the console (~):
- Device search: Type
sounddevice_list. You will see a list of all available audio outputs. If your headphones have index [3], enter the commandsound_device_override 3. - Resetting the audio engine: Type
snd_duckerreleasetime 0.5. Sometimes this "pushes through" a stuck audio stream. - Volume: It is basic, but check the
volumecommand. Sometimes it resets to 0 after bugs. Typevolume 0.8.
Microphone sound not working in CS2
If you can hear everyone but they cannot hear you, try this:
- Command
voice_modenable 1: Activates voice chat. - Activation threshold: If your voice is getting "cut off", type
voice_threshold -120. This forces the game to catch even quiet sounds. - Streamline Push-to-Talk: In the audio settings, enable "Streamline Push-to-Talk". This will remove freezes and bugs when pressing the talk button.
Specific audio errors
Here are answers to specific queries:
- Quiet sound in CS2: Check Windows settings. Disable "Mono audio" in the accessibility parameters. In the game itself, set EQ profile to: Crisp.
- Muffled sound in CS:2 This often happens because of enabled "enhancements" (7.1, Dolby Atmos). Disable them in the headphone properties in Windows.
- Sound in CS2 demo: If the replay is silent, type
snd_voip_volume 1and make sure all tracks are enabled in the demo mixer.
What to do if nothing helped?
If the sound disappeared in CS and commands do not save you:
- Verify integrity of Steam files: Library -> Right-click on CS2 -> Properties -> Installed files -> Verify integrity.
- Update drivers: Especially if you have USB headphones with their own software (Razer, SteelSeries, Logitech).
