In Counter-Strike 2, sound is half the information. The ability to hear an enemy behind a wall or realize someone is "shifting" at the other end of a bridge provides a massive advantage. However, standard settings often make explosions too loud while footsteps remain barely audible. In this guide, we will break down how to correctly configure the equalizer and Windows to hear footsteps in CS2 as clearly as possible.
Fine-tuning Windows for CS2
Before moving to the equalizer, you need to prepare the system itself. By default, Windows can distort the soundstage.
- Disable Enhancements: Press
Win + R, typemmsys.cpl. Right-click your headphones -> Properties -> Enhancements tab. CheckDisable all enhancements. This removes unnecessary digital processing. - Loudness Equalization: In the same menu, you can try enabling
Loudness Equalization. - Pro: Quiet sounds (footsteps) become louder, and loud sounds (shots) become quieter.
- Con: It becomes harder to determine the exact distance to the enemy. Test this in a match.
Equalizer settings for footsteps in CS2
The frequency of footsteps in CS2 lies in the range of 400 Hz to 4 kHz. To "highlight" them against the bass, use a third-party equalizer (e.g., Equalizer APO or your headphone software) and set the following values:
"Perfect Hearing" Preset:
- 60-125 Hz (Bass): Lower by
-4or-6 dB. This muffles the rumble of explosions and grenades. - 250-500 Hz: Leave at
0or increase slightly. This contains part of the movement sounds. - 1 kHz - 4 kHz (Mids and Highs): Increase by
+3or+5 dB. This is the primary range for footsteps and the clinking of grenade pins. - 8 kHz and above: Leave unchanged or lower slightly so the ringing from flashbangs doesn't "pierce" your ears.
Built-in equalizer in CS2 settings
If you don't want to install third-party software, there are three profiles in the game itself. Go to "Settings" -> "Audio" -> "EQ Profile":
- Natural: Standard sound without processing.
- Crisp: The best choice for boosting footsteps. It muffles low frequencies (explosions) and brings high frequencies (steps, jumps) to the foreground.
- Smooth: Smooths out sharp sounds. Not recommended for competitive play, as footsteps become "muffled."
L/R Isolation function
An important setting has appeared in CS2 - L/R Isolation.
- If set to
0%, the sound will be more monophonic (like in older versions of CS). - If set to
100%, you will clearly understand which side the sound is coming from, but it will be harder to tell how close or far the enemy is. Recommendation: Start with50-70%and adjust for your specific headphones.
